Toll in Norway: Everything about costs, payment methods and transponders

Tolls in Norway apply to various roads, bridges and tunnels. They can be settled electronically via vintrica.com.

With vintrica’s electronic toll solution, your journeys are automatically recorded and charged retrospectively based on the routes taken. The system functions like a traditional toll box or transponder, but is entirely digital. The solution is completely virtual – there is no chip or device that needs to be installed in the vehicle. Instead, your number plate is captured electronically, and the toll charges are automatically assigned to your customer account and invoiced later.

Toll roads

There are several toll roads, bridges, and tunnels in Norway. Some notable examples are:

  • The Oslofjord Tunnel

A tunnel that connects Oslo with the surrounding regions and charges a toll

  • The Svinesund Bridge

A bridge on the Norwegian-Swedish border that charges a toll for use

  • The Atlantic Ocean Road

A famous coastal road known for its spectacular bridges, which also charges a toll

Toll fees depend on the type of vehicle, season, and payment method.

City toll in Norway

Some Norwegian cities charge a city toll for driving in certain city areas. The fee depends on the city, time of day and type of vehicle and was introduced to regulate traffic and reduce pollution. Motorcycles are usually exempt from the city toll.

Toll charges and payment

When passing through Norwegian toll stations, vehicles are recorded electronically. With vintrica’s electronic toll solution, the charges are automatically assigned to your customer account and settled afterwards with ease. Vehicles registered in Norway usually pay tolls directly to the toll companies.

Payment methods

Toll charges can be settled directly via vintrica.com – with no need for manual payments while on the road. In addition, payment in Norway is also possible through other electronic systems such as AutoPASS. In exceptional cases, some toll stations still accept cash or credit card payments.

Contract with chip usage

If you stay in Norway for more than 2 months, you can benefit from a contract with chip usage called “brikke”, which offers a discount on the toll. However, since 2022 it is no longer possible to conclude a contract for transporder usage directly with Norwegian toll companies. Instead, contracts for the use of the Tansporder and the associated chip must be concluded with the issuing companies under their own contracts. The chip is then sent by post and payment is made either by invoice or by credit card.

Does Norway have a vignette?

In Norway, tolls are paid without the need for a vignette or ticket. The AutoPASS system enables automatic payment – the easiest way is through vintrica’s electronic toll solution. With vintrica’s digital toll box, tolls are recorded and charged automatically – with no physical device required in the vehicle. Only a few toll stations in the country still accept payment by cash or credit card. There is therefore no physical vignette that needs to be displayed on the vehicle.

Fines

If no valid payment is made or the number plate is not registered in the toll system, fines and additional charges may apply. As there are usually no physical toll booths on site, vehicles must be equipped with an electronic toll solution such as vintrica’s electronic toll service (digital toll box) or an AutoPASS chip in order to pay the charges correctly.
